Once you decide on a business choose a business name. Your business name, like your name, is something that will be around for a long time and what you will be known for. Determine what contact information you want to use as well. Will it be your home address and phone number or do you need to create a separate line and address specifically for your business?

Create a logo for your business. A logo is something that will be used on marketing materials, your website, your business cards, letterhead and much more.

Register a domain name even if you have no idea when or how you will get a website.
At the same time acquire a business email account, preferably one that references people back to your website. If your business website is www.justanexample.com then your email address can be info@thisisjustanexample.com.

Order business cards and add your logo and all contact information including your new domain name and email address. Carry them on you at all times. You may find that you are at the grocery store or the post office and realize you have a marketing opportunity. With that in mind, always remember that you are making an impression and as we have all heard, first impressions are the most important and last the longest.

Open a business bank account and keep your business funds separated from personal funds. Keep up with receipts and make sure you deduct business expenses when filing taxes!

Find an organizational system that works for you and maintain it! This will save you an amazing amount of time and frustration!

Look for every opportunity to market your business. While building your business funds will most likely be tight so take every opportunity to market your business as inexpensively as possible. Look online and in local publications. Knock on doors and meet as many people as you can. Think of creative ways to get the word out.
